Name - Maene, (Pronounced My-ee-nee)

Apparent Age - Around 19, although people looking into her eyes sometimes suspect that she is much much older than that.

Age - Unknown, even to herself, but she is very old.
Sex - Female
Race - Unknown. Calls herself a "Fader"

Appearance - Maene is fairly tall and slender with a delicate air. She is so pale that her skin almost looks blue-tinged, much paler than any normal person, even a vampire. Her hair is long, dead straight and a very dark blue-black colour, falling down to just below her waist. Her eyes are entirely black, without any whites. They look slightly absent, as though she is not always there, or is not always completely sure what she's thinking. She always wears a fairly loose black toga, belted around her waist with a dark blue cord.

History -
Maene was one of the few beings to live in the `dimension' of The Powers That Be. Although not technically a dimension it did have physical properties that made it home to several particular individuals, although The Powers themselves never used it, merely kept it as a place to hold certain people. Maene was one of them.

From the time of her birth she was taken and brought up among the other people there, and she existed there for millennia. Maene was the child of a god and a vampire in an entirely different dimension, one in which a powerful witch had tampered with the very fabric of the dimension, accidentally causing her birth. Technically she was not even supposed to exist, as soon as she was born the witch's alterations began to further destroy the universe until time itself couldn't keep moving.

To correct this The Powers removed Maene from the dimension and altered it so that she had never been born there. As a result of that change she gained her abilities to fade, but she could never again enter a normal dimension, as The Powers feared that she would corrupt them too until they were destroyed. So for many thousands of years she existed in The Powers' holding `dimension,' watching how The Powers altered things ever so slightly to make sure that the worlds were kept in balance, and that they were never totally destroyed.

Unfortunately Maene was not content just to observe. She fell in love with a human man while watching from afar, and determined that he would not suffer the terrible future fate had in store for him. She changed the fabric of the universe as she'd seen The Powers do it, so that another man instead of him suffered his fate.

The Powers realised what she'd done instantly, and it was decided that she could not stay where there would always be the temptation to change things. However, they also had no idea what dimension could hold her without breaking up.

They came at last to a much-altered dimension, in which a vampiress had become pregnant and a particular slayer had been resurrected twice from the dead, when usually those things would have been prevented by the rules of that dimension. They decided that she would not change things anymore by being there, so they wiped her mind of most of the memories of the place where they were, and of the man she'd loved, and sent her to the only dimension that could have her. Buffy's.

The changing of her memories caused some side effects that they had not expected, taking out something as deep- rooted as her love had slightly damaged her mind, leaving her confused and slightly child-like in some of her reactions. They could not entirely take out all memories of her life without destroying her mind entirely, and so she still remembers where she was, and some things about why, but those memories slip in and out of her mind elusively, sometimes she knows many things, sometimes nothing. She also occasionally remembers things she saw while in her previous `home', so sometimes has unexpected knowledge about things which she quickly forgets.

She has been in Buffy's dimension for 3 days, unseen, but she still finds everything muddled and strange, particularly as she doesn't understand how anything works there, not even simple things like fire or what books are.

Personality -
Maene is nearly always good-tempered, and cheerful about most aspects of life, including the fact that she can remember very little about anything, particularly anything that happened before she ended up in her new dimension. She has a child's curiosity about her new surroundings, but is not that easily dismissed. Under her almost childlike exterior she is clever and aware of everything, often watching and storing things for later use. She likes to be around people, simply because it reminds her that she is still there. She has an easy affection for nearly everyone she meets, and is fairly trusting too.

Having never been around normal people before, or even in a proper physical dimension, her mind works differently to everyone's around her, which often gives her the appearance of mild insanity, or simple-mindedness, but she is not either of those things, merely different. However, sometimes she is more together than other times, due to the imbalance her mind gained when her memories were changed. She is not afraid of anything much, the only thing that frightens her is the thought that someone could change her mind again, so she is wary of people with psychic powers of any sort.

Abilities/Powers -
Maene can fade in and out of substantiality, so that sometimes she is as corporeal as any other human or demon, and sometimes she is even less `there' than the air. She can change her substance entirely at will; so can thin out enough to move through solid objects or people. If she walks through someone they will possibly feel slightly uncomfortable, but most people will not notice unless they are fairly in tune with their senses. When she is entirely `faded out' she is not visible as anything more than a slight shimmer in the air, and her voice cannot be heard, although she can still listen to and watch what's going on around her. When she is becoming more insubstantial her voice sounds quieter and echoes slightly until it fades out, and she looks more transparent until the point where she too fades out.
